How it All Began

Now which one would be called 'Licorice'?

How is it that Highland View Resort acquired pet goats? Well here's the story....

Once apon a time Art, the manager of Highland View Resort met a farmer while looking for a wagon. The farmer had a goat named Sweetpea and asked Art if he wanted a goat.
"No no no," said Art. "What would we need with a goat?"

Three weeks later the farmer shows up anyway at Highland View Resort with Sweetpea. The kids (human children) instantly fell in love with Sweetpea, so Highland View Resort agreed to keep Sweetpea for the summer. Sweetpea was quite a tree climber. That summer getting caught in a tree and had to be rescued. Everyone fell in love with Sweetpea, that summer, so next spring everyone thought it would be neat to have Sweetpea back the next summer. But when they visited the farmer to inquire about Sweetpea, Sweetpea was gone. This was terrible. All the children were expecting to see Sweetpea again that summer.

"I know of a woman with a farm up near Velleres (little town between Keene and Hastings) who has a goat," suggested Jeff. "Maybe we can loan her goat for the summer."

Winona was the woman's name. Soon she came down to Highland View Resort to inspect the premises, and agreed to let her goat Hershey stay at Highland View for the summer. It so happened that Hershey was pregnant, and during that summer she gave birth at Highland View to a girl who came to be named Licorice. Hershey looked after Licorice that summer like a very good mother would.

The summer ended and Hersey and Licorice went back to the farm. At this point Highland View Resort did not own the goats, so around Christmas time , when the owners were down in Florida for their vacation, Jeff and Mike visited Winona to ascertain that they could get Licorice to come back the next summer. Children enjoyed the goats so much that Highland View Resort did not want to dissapoint the children again by being goatless the next summer.

"I'm selling Licorice," said Winona.

"Oh no,"replied Jeff. "You can't sell Licorice. We would like her back next summer."

But it was her goat and she could do what she wanted. Jeff immediately phoned management and suggested Highland View Resort buy Licorice. Management finally decided to actually own goats instead of just borrowing.

Thus the next summer, Highland View Resort owned Licorice and also Esra, Licorice's brother, but continued to board them with Winona over the winter. That was how it all began. Now pet goats have become part of the Highland View family.A few years have past. Read about the latest news, latest characters, and latest developments, on the 'Goat News' page!
